Vor gefühlten 100 Jahren, zu Zeiten als ich noch als Entwickler unter Unix unterwegs war, hatte ich mir die erste Ausgabe dieses Buch zugelegt und es nie bereut. Die aktuelle Version wurde jetzt von mir erstanden, da ich meine Programmierkenntnisse (auch ganz praktisch) auffrischen will. Dass mittlerweile Linux im Buch starke Berücksichtigung findet, kommt meiner Interessenlage sehr entgegen, genauso dass ich es in elektronischer Form als Kindle-Book erstehen konnte.Abschliessend bleibt mir nur zu bemerken, dass es manchem Unix-Admin und IT-Architekten nicht schaden würde, die Nase in dieses Buch zu versenken. Auch wenn dieses Buch schwerpunktmässig für Entwickler geschrieben wurde, bekommt man vieles in einer Detailiertheit präsentiert, wie in kaum einem anderen Buch.
Das ist echt eine Bibel um Kodes zu schreiben... DER einzige vollständige tolle Bezugspunkt, ich kann euch es sicherlich weiterempfehlen
William Richard Stevens war Computer Wissenschaftler und Autor einer Reihe von Bücher über Unix und Networking. Seine Bücher zeichnen durch ihre legendäre Klarheit und Eleganz aus. Es gibt Lehrbücher – wohl für jedes Fachgebiet –, die ganze Regalmeter andere Schriften in den Schatten stellen, Bücher, die, einmal in die Hand genommen, sich fortan als unerlässlicher Ratgeber und unerschöpfliche Inspirationsquelle erweisen. Stevens Werke gehören definitiv in diese Kategorie.Unix wurde von Ken Thompson und Dennis Ritchie Anfang der 70iger Jahre bewusst als Gegenpol zu dem gescheiterten Multics Projekt, als schlankes Betriebssystem mit einer einfachen eleganten Philosophie entworfen; es wurde als erstes System 1972 in C umgeschrieben, und seitdem zig-fach portiert, und gilt heute – dank seiner Inkarnation als Linux – als quasi- Standardplattform für alle Arten von Internet Servern. Richard Stevens ist einer der besten Unix Kenner, mit tiefen Einsichten in seine Grundlagen und Interna; das beweist sein vorliegendes “Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment“, das sich, wie im Vorwort betont wird, ausführlich mit der Einführung in die Unix C- APIs beschäftigt. Und es ist gerade Stenvens besonderes Geschick, dass daraus nicht eine lieblose Auflistung der entsprechenden man- Pages geworden ist, vielmehr gelingt es dem Autor, das lebendige Zusammenspiel der zu Grunde liegenden Paradigmen zu betonen, und mit vielen Code Fragmenten und gesamten Listings zu illusteren.Gerade die Kapitel über Process Relationships, Signaling etc. sind wahre Juwelen: hier erfährt der Leser, wie mit Hilfe der äußerst einfachen Konstrukte der Prozess- Vererbung und Gruppierung, die Jobverwaltung funktioniert, welche Bedeutung Controlling Terminals genau haben, wie eine Shell eine Prozess- Kette bildet, oder was tatsächlich passiert, wenn ein User Ctrl-C auf seinem Terminal drückt.Die klare Logik, zusammen mit den zahlreichen, nachvollziehbaren Beispielen, versetzen den (geduldigen) Leser in die Lage, sich rasch 'friei' in der Unix Welt bewegen zu können. Hilfreich mag auch sein, dass man die meisten Beispiele auch mittels Perl als Script nachbauen kann. Aber das Buch ist nicht nur für Programmierer – im engeren Sinn, wie der Titel nahelegen mag – interessant, dank der stringenten Art des Autors, Ideen herauszuarbeiten und herauszustellen, ist es auch für Alle von unschätzbaren Wert, die die Unix Philosophie (ohne Ausreden: ...im Prinzip... oder Abkürzungen) 'verstehen' möchten.Das Thema Netzwerk Programmierung wurde bewusst ausgespart, damit befasst sich sich in aller Breite und Tiefe das zwei- bändige Werk “UNIX Network Programming“ von R. As long as there will be Unix (forever), there will be this book. Of course I haven't read it all but I've consulted it hundreds of times. This is the definitive reference book for every serious and professional UNIX systems programmer. Every concept is explained clearly, there are thousands of code examples, hundreds of illustrations and graphics that show how various concepts relate.I've placed this book #25 in my Top 100 Programming, Computer and Science books list:[...](If this link gets removed google for >>catonmat top 100 programming computer science books<< to find my article.).
This book is a fantastic starting point in life. Somehow our public schools over look teaching the fundamental skills presented in this book. We learn how to play with toys on simple computers and never really learn what we are doing.The real strength of this book is in the definitions. We get to see the purpose and flexibility of system calls and functions. Not just use them but understand them. UNIX functions as job control or signals are explained in detail. Let's take just one item "waitpid":The waitpid function provides three features that aren't provided by the wait function.You will have to read the book to find out what they are. However there are examples also. Now for people with real systems like AIX all you have to do is add a "k" to the front of the call and you have the AIX kernel function call "kwaitpid"; voila you now have an understanding that cannot be found clearly in a Red Book.It does help some to have a pre-understanding of the system do you can use the book to fill in the education holes missed when necessary.The index is worth its weight in gold as you can find functions headers and concepts all in alphabetical order. My favorite is the definitions.As much as I am a fan of the internet it also pays to carry the information in the form of a book. And all this book has to do is save a couple of hours and it has paid for its self.Each addition adds newer information at the expense of dropping what appears to be obsolete information; so it would behoove you to obtain a copy of each addition and periodically look for the latest.
